Ok, let's start things off. Yoh Asakura. He is engaged to marry Anna, his strict mentor. And it can be a real pain. He's the shaman of a ghost named Amidamaru and together they are required to fight off evil spirits, fight evil shamans, and somewhere in all that fighting and training...be Anna's personal slaves, cooks, and maids.
Manta Oyamada: Manta Oyamada (also known as Morty [what a dumb name] in the anime). Manta is a meek and demure student who attends the same private school as Yoh. Manta is short and has a hard time getting by, he is however very smart and useful to have around. He also always has his huge dictionary with him. Manta is Yoh's best friend and Anna's 2nd slave. His heart is pure enough to allow him to see ghosts which makes the story flow better, but he can't channel their powers like other Shamans such as Yoh, Anna, Ryu, Ren, and many others.
Anna: Anna is Yoh's strict trainer and fiancee. She is useful to have around because she is an itako meaning a traditional shaman. These are the shamans that summon other spirits. She is one of the main reasons that Lee Bailong was defeated.
Amidamaru: Born on January 6, 1385, Amidamaru was considered a fiend or demon because he was such a powerful samarai. (I guess you could call him an early Hitokiri Battosai). He died at the young age of 24 when he was killed after he took down several of the king's men because he refused to kill his best friend for his master. Amidamaru is Yoh's companion and is actuallly very nice, he especially loves white rice.
Ren: A cruel, chinese, arrogant shaman. In the American Anime his name is Len or Lenny, this is because Ren can also be translated as a hard l sound. Much like Loofy or Krillin. He knows martial arts and fights with a kwan dao as well does his ghost, legendary chinese war lord Bason. A Kwan Dao is a long stick with a blade curved on the end. He nearly does defeat Yoh however, he is very powerful.
Tao Jun: The older sister of Ren, she is a dao-shi. This means that she takes lifeless bodies and uses a talisman to control them. Her ghost is Lee Bailong. When Yoh defeats her and her ghost, they re-start, and turn to the good side and understand that a ghost does have feelings.
Lee Bailong: Once he was a kung fu action movie star. He was the greatest martial artist ever and had so many fans until he mysteriosuly died. Later you will find out this was no accident. He was a birthday present to Jun. He was killed by her uncle (or grandpa..cant remember) and nobody knew till now. When he comes to his senses his first reaction is to kill Jun, but when his old master is summoned by Anna to talk sense into him, he wakes up, becomes a spirit, and turns, like Jun, to the good side.
Ryu (Rio in Anime): Ryu is also known as Wooden Sword Ryu with his Ultimite Dadompa (Ultimate haircut) which gets cut off in the first issue when him and Yoh get into a fight. Later he goes to the good side and becomes a Shaman when a spirit logdes himself in his body and unlocks something inside him. He is the leader of the Dead Enders Gang.
